Olya is a model and actor based in New York City. We met up in Bryant Park during one of my recent trips to the city, to create some new seasonal editorial lifestyle portraits and headshots for Olya’s model agency. Makeup was by amazing NYC makeup artist Gabrielle Stevens. Olya and Gabrielle were a great team to work with.
I was shooting with the Nikon Df and Leica M240 cameras on this trip. The Df is a camera known for its exceptional low-light capabilities, so we planned our session to start in late-afternoon, where we’d shoot some daylight portraits around the New York Public Library. We then carried the session into the early evening, where we could take advantage of the fabulous holiday lighting at the annual holiday market in Bryant Park.
Using primarily available light – sometimes with a simple reflector – I could keep my kit small and flexible so we could move around the area without obstructing pedestrian traffic in the busy park. We at times had to wait for passers-by or background intrusions to clear out, but the resulting images were exactly what we were after.

I shot most of the photos above with Nikon’s AF-S Nikkor 58mm f/1.4 lens on the Df. I created a few of them, however, with the Leica 50mm Summilux ASPH lens on the Leica M240.
